Infants - Curriculum


We believe passionately in providing a curriculum that is broad and balanced. In the Reception classes our curriculum is based on the Early Years Foundation Stage. Learning experiences are provided that meet the developmental needs of all children. These ensure children have a mixture of direct teaching and exploring their own interests. Children are assessed through ongoing observations by teachers using the Foundation Stage Profile.

When children move into Year 1 and during their next six years in Bryony, the children’s curriculum is based on the National Curriculum. The curriculum is organised into subjects; Literacy, Mathematics, Science, Information & Communication Technology (ICT), History, Geography, Art, Design Technology, Physical Education, PSHE (Personal, Social & Health Education) & RE. French and Music are taught weekly by specialist teachers.

Topics are carefully planned to ensure that learning is relevant and inspirational. Children within each year group follow the same topic each term.

Children are regularly assessed in the core subjects of English and Mathematics through normal class activities. This includes weekly spelling tests and daily one to one time to reading aloud.
Children’s progress is monitored throughout the year so that any child slipping behind is identified and supported. Equally we support gifted children to ensure they continue to excel. Children in Year 2 also undertake Key Stage 1 National Assessments (SATS).
